The Pilgrim John Howland Society

The Pilgrim John Howland Society was organized on May 18, 1897, shortly after the creation of the General Society of Mayflower Descendants.  A constitution and by-laws was adopted on Nov. 28, 1899 and officers were elected at that time.

The objects of the society are:

To perpetuate the memory of our ancestors, John Howland and his wife, Elizabeth (Tilley) Howland; to preserve and publish any manuscripts relating to the John Howland family; to erect and keep in good repair a memorial to their memory in the Pilgrim Church at Plymouth; to assist in prosecuting research in England and Holland to discover their ancestors; to retain possession of and to keep in good condition the properties known as the "Howland House" at Plymouth, Mass. and the Howland homesites at Rocky Nook, Kingston, Mass.

The Howland House was purchased by the society in 1912 and renovated in 1913. The house is open to visitors during summer months. Coincidental with the Pilgrim tercentenary celebration in 1920, the society bought the site of the John Howland home at Rocky Nook. This was a small part of the 100 acres that John Howland purchased from John Jenney in 1638.

The Society publishes the Howland Quarterly, which is sent to all members. This newsletter is  filled with information and interesting articles about the happenings of the Society and pilgrim articles. We are an active society; our annual meetings are held in Plymouth, Massachusetts in August.

From our Historian:

Pilgrim Greetings,

I am writing you to extend an invitation for membership in our society as a descendant of John Howland, the Pilgrim. If you already hold membership in the Society of Mayflower Descendants in your state, your genealogy work is done. We would only need a photocopy of your approved application to the Mayflower Society and have you complete our application. If you are already a member, we are glad to have you and we hope to see you at the Annual Meeting.

Annual Dues are $25 for descendants over 21. Junior memberships have no annual fees. Spouses of members may join in the Marriage and Parentage category (husbands or wives of descendants who become parents of a descendant child). For spouses where there are no children, there is the Marriage Membership category. Both spouse categories pay an annual dues of $25. All may become Life members for a fee of $300. Finally, we have recently added a New Howland Society membership category: Friend of the Pilgrim John Howland Society! Individuals who are not descendants of John and Elizabeth Howland, but who are interested in joining our society are cordially invited to join as a Friend of the PJHS. See the "How to Join" page for a Friends application.

We look forward to hearing from you.
