Letter From the President

Welcome members and visitors to the Pilgrim John Howland Society website!

The Society has been a part of my life since I was about seven years old. I have spent countless summers driving from New York City to Plymouth with my family, and participated in numerous events and activities, including the annual archeological dig. I have been a Director on the board for about five years and have enjoyed working with my fellow board members over the years. Both my father and grandfather have also served on the board in the past. We Howland cousins keep our family at the center of it all! We have a lot to look forward to, together. Our organization has a strong legacy, but our operations need a few updates. We are working on our communications with the public and our members, such as this new website and through our social media presence. We are improving our administrative procedures by assessing our investments, our bylaws, and making sure each executive position has a transition document developed. All things that will help to sustain us in the future.

Future exciting endeavors include planning for 2020, the 400th anniversary of the Pilgrim landing, with fellow family organizations. We are developing new ways of recruiting members, and developing new programming and events. We are continuing to invest in our assets: including the Jabez Howland House, Rocky Nook and our Shallop the Elizabeth Tilley, and finding new ways to preserve and celebrate the legacy of both John Howland and Elizabeth Tilley.

None of this is possible without you. While we have an exceptional set of board members, none of this is possible without your support! Please consider making a contribution to the organization; whether that be in the form of time, talent or treasure. Have a suggestion or some constructive criticism? We want to hear from you! Please remember that we are a volunteer based organization. Membership means something: so we need your assistance to help implement new and exciting ideas. Together, we will strive to fulfill the goals of the Pilgrim John Howland Society and its mission to hold high the light of our pilgrim ancestor legacy, today, tomorrow, and for generations to come!

I encourage you to plan a trip to Plymouth if you haven’t had a chance to visit with us yet. The house will be open in 2018 from Memorial Day weekend through Columbus Day. Our banquet and annual meeting will be held the weekend of August 10-11, 2018. This year we are hoping to plan some additional member events that weekend which we will share with membership as details become available. We will also have available to those who attend that weekend a new booklet including an agenda of events, directions to key locations and even maps for a self-guided tour of Rocky Nook and Burial Hill. The archeology dig will also be held August 6-9.

We hope you’ll be able to join us for these all of exciting events and more!
